Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC)
The Louisiana Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) was established to support the efforts of our citizens with disabilities to live independently in the community of their choice.
· The Council is federally mandated by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and whose purpose is to promote a philosophy of independent living. · The Council is made up of 21 members who are eligible to serve up to two three year terms. · The SILC meets quarterly on the second Thursday of that month. Member duties include attending meetings, working with the Louisiana Rehabilitation Council, federal report requirements, and implementing the State Plan. · For those of you traveling from out of town to the meetings, travel and mileage are reimbursed by the Council. · Goals for the Council for the 2012 year include- providing valuable information through guest speakers at meetings, identifying target groups who will benefit from both awareness of independent living and independent living services, promoting independent living in the community and collaborating with other groups. · The followings positions on the Council are vacant: 1. Representative of a Center for Independent Living 2. Advocate for Individuals with Disabilities 3. Representative of an organization providing services 4. Advocate for Individuals with Disabilities 5. Advocate for Individuals with Disabilities 6. Representative of Private Business 7.
