Today, the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) National Board of Directors voted Gov. John Bel Edwards as the organization’s 2019 National Board chairman. The governor previously served as the vice chair of the JAG National Board in 2018.

Founded more than three decades ago, JAG is a state-based national non-profit that helps young people across the country graduate, pursue postsecondary education opportunities and secure quality entry-level jobs.

“I am humbled and honored to have been voted chair of the JAG National Board of Directors. For the past three years, I've been blessed to work alongside some incredibly talented people, on both sides of the aisle, who are dedicated to JAG and to preparing our young people for future success," Gov. Edwards said. "When our young people succeed, we all succeed, and the most important investment that we can make is in the future of our children. I've seen firsthand the impact that JAG-LA has had on Louisiana, and I look forward to continuing that work across the country as JAG's National Board chair in 2019."

Gov. Eric Holcomb of Indiana currently serves as JAG's National Board chair. Gov. Edwards' term as chairman begins on April 30, 2019.

JAG-LA is the Louisiana-based affiliate of the national organization that serves young people from 12 to 21 years of age.  JAG-LA provides an educational setting that promotes academic and skills attainment, civic responsibility, leadership development and social awareness that is necessary to become a responsible citizen and productive worker.

As a result of Gov. Edwards’ commitment to JAG, the number of programs in Louisiana schools has dramatically increased and this year, JAG-LA has served 6079 students. The Louisiana-based based began with 67 original programs and now has a total of 122 programs across the state.

JAG-LA and the Louisiana Department of Education work with students who have significant obstacles in their lives that could disrupt school completion or hinder successful entry into the workforce or postsecondary educational programs.

In 2018, JAG-LA received the National “5of5” Performance Award while doubling the scale of the program.
