Gov. Jeff Landry Announces Extension of Louisiana National Guard Security Mission in New Orleans

With strong support from Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and Mayor Helena Moreno

BATON ROUGE, La. – Governor Jeff Landry today announced that the U.S. Department of War has authorized a six-month extension of the Louisiana National Guard’s security mission in the New Orleans area to continue supporting state and local law enforcement partners. Approximately 120 Louisiana National Guard Soldiers will remain mobilized under Federal Title 32 orders to augment public safety operations focused on crime reduction, enhanced responsiveness, and maintaining a visible presence to deter criminal activity throughout New Orleans.

“President Trump continues to fulfill his commitment to making America Safe Again. I also want to thank Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Attorney General Pam Bondi for their commitment. They’re a great team, ” said Governor Jeff Landry. “The National Guard complements cities with high crime problems. For example, when President Trump requested troops for Washington, D.C., Louisiana was one of the first to offer help, and the city is safer now. This continued deployment will help us combat violence in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana. Since taking office, we’ve made real progress in reducing crime in Louisiana, but the job isn’t over. Federal partnerships in our toughest cities have worked, and with President Trump and his Cabinet’s continued support, we’ll continue saving lives, protecting families, and restoring the Rule of Law.”

“My number one concern is always the safety of our city's residents and guests. Having the National Guard here working in cooperation with us, especially during Mardi Gras, has truly shown the world that New Orleans can now be the gold standard for safety and security. We're excited to welcome the millions of guests who visit our city each year, and show the world that New Orleans is not only the greatest host city, but also the safest,” said Superintendent of Police Anne Kirkpatrick.

“As Mayor of the City of New Orleans, I write to express my gratitude for the law enforcement support provided through the deployment of military branches and federal agencies during Mardi Gras, helping ensure this year’s celebration was one of the safest we’ve had. The safety of our residents and guests remains my highest priority as Mayor.  The presence of the federal coordination team, including the U.S. Coast Guard, FBI, and CISA, was instrumental in guaranteeing a secure environment through the festivities. We are grateful to them and our Governor for the collaboration between federal partners, National Guard, Louisiana State Police, and local law enforcement, ” said Mayor Helena Moreno. “It exemplifies the gold standard for coordinated security efforts’ during major events. Strategic deployment of federal resources for major events has made a meaningful difference.  Building on the success of these deployments, my Administration seeks to continue and strengthen this partnership to ensure ongoing safety and security for residents and guests of the City of New Orleans during major events. New Orleans proudly welcomes millions of visitors each year, and it is my goal to show the world that our city is not only the greatest host city, but also the safest.”

“Our Soldiers are proud to stand alongside our law enforcement partners in support of the people of Louisiana,” said Maj. Gen. Thomas Friloux, Adjutant General of Louisiana. “From New Year’s through the Carnival season, this mission showed what can be accomplished when agencies work together with a shared focus on public safety. We remain committed to those partnerships as we continue supporting efforts to keep the City of New Orleans safe.”
